Life, Chapter 2

So December was... Okay, let's start at the beginning.

December 2018 was one of the biggest happenings in my entire 21 years of living. I FINALLY graduated college with my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and yes, I could hear the choir of angels singing as I walked across the stage in the Pete Matthews Coliseum in my intentionally, light blue Converse.

Not only does this mean that I will never have to take another Western Civilizations class again but it also means that the Jacksonville State University Teacher Education Services sent off my official recommendation for a Class B Teaching Certificate to the Alabama State Board of Education. YES. During December I also received an offer for a long-term substitute position in the third grade at Saks Elementary School from January through May. I have worked in and around SES for the past two years and taking this job felt like coming home. Unfortunately, a third-grade teacher has cancer and she is having to go on catastrophic leave to battle through treatments and recovery. While I hate the reason I was hired, I am so excited to be back at Saks and working with this incredible teacher and her students.

      Finally, December brought something I have been waiting on for a very long time. On Christmas Eve my high school sweetheart and absolute soulmate, Ryan, proposed to me at our kitchen table.
Ryan and I have been together for almost seven years and have been through everything together. I knew seven years ago that he was who I was going to spend the rest of my life with and while a ring is certainly not going to change my unconditional commitment to him and our family, it was such an incredible milestone for us.

2018 is going to full of such amazing adventures and I just cannot wait.

What is 21st Century Teaching and Learning?

I used to think that the term "21st Century Teaching and Learning" meant using technology. It meant that my students were somehow using a computer or tablet to do something. That something could have simply been using the calculator app instead of the actual calculator that was sitting, abandoned, in a closet. I thought that because that's what many teachers thought it was when I was in school. The "21st Century skills" movement came about when I was in middle/high school and I can honestly remember teachers being heavily praised for making us take tests on the computer or using an app instead of a calculator. I am not saying that to disrespect any of my teachers because they were just doing what they were taught. It was only later that this trend in education developed into something truly beneficial for students, teachers, and our society. AMSTI Preservice Training - Science

I completed AMSTI Year 1 science preservice training for the fourth grade the week of January 30th through February 3rd, 2017, with Mrs. Tara Hood. We started training Monday morning by dissecting the Next Generation Science Standards as well as the practice standards for fourth grade. I found it beneficial that Mrs. Hood took the time during the week to also point out when and where we were addressing the practice standards because it helped me to visualize them as activities and processes instead of simply a list of abstract skills. This has also helped me in planning my STEM challenge for my practicum class in that I can more easily implement these skills in multiple ways now having seen them both in AMSTI training and in class with Dr. Troncale.
